American Flatbread is a return to bread's roots, an endeavor not to mass-produce bread but to explore the possibility of how good bread can be. American Flatbread began as an experiment in post-modern bread baking. They have reached back to the very beginning of bread baking and used the same methods; simple wholesome ingredients shaped by hands of thoughtful caring people baked in a primitive wood-fired earthen oven. Red Hen is made up of about 24 full and part-time employees who work, collectively, 364 days a year. When Red Hen restocks their racks with fresh bread, all of yesterday's bread is gathered and distributed to local food shelves and farms – they insist that they want their bread to fill bellies, not landfills! Red Hen also firmly believes that food doesn't have to be elaborate to be excellent. They share a conviction that beauty and joy are essential to a full life, and they certainly practice their craft to that end. The Association of Vermont Recyclers (AVR), founded in 1982, is best known for its educational theater programs, workshops, school technical assistance and presentations on recycling, composting, hazardous waste and other environmental topics. AVR is certainly much more. During its twenty five years, AVR has been a leader in shaping and defining Vermont's recycling efforts and goals.
